No Sugar Added Cherry Pie
This was a recipe I saw on a Food Network show. It has become a favorite for family and friends who have conditions that require they control sugar intake.
We would do a big bake sale at church every year and one friend would always ask when I was planning to bring the cherry pie!
The hardest part is finding the canned pie filling. Cherry pie filling is everywhere, but you will need to go to a larger supermarket to find it in the No Sugar Added variety.
Yield: 1 Pie
Preheat to 375°
Ingredients:
Crust for a two crust pie (either homemade or your favorite store bought)
20 oz can of no sugar added cherry pie filling
15 oz bag of sweet dark red cherries, frozen, no sugar
¼ cup Grand Marnier (I have subbed Triple Sec in a pinch)
2 tbsp butter
Instructions:
Put one crust into a pie plate.
In a bowl mix the can of pie filling, the bag of cherries and the grand mariner. Stir gently until well mixed.
Cut the tablespoon of butter into 12 – 15 tiny pieces and put into the cherry mixture. Gently stir them until they are evenly distributed in the cherries.
Pour the cherry mixture into the pie crust and lay out the second crust on a cutting board. Cut it into strips and make the traditional woven top crust for a cherry pie. Pinch the edges together and crimp.
Bake at 375 for 1 hour or until the crust is browned and the cherries are bubbly. Allow to cool some.
This is a runny pie. It won’t cut into pretty pie slices, but you won’t care. It’s too yummy.
