Naturally Dying Easter Eggs
We tried this one year and really enjoyed it. But don’t expect this to be neater than all those little cups of dye. Instead we used 5 or 6 pots to boil the eggs instead of one.
The colors are more muted than with artificial dyes, but they were really pretty. You can add interest to the eggs by tying things to them before you boil them. For instance, take a leaf or flower, lay it on the egg and secure it with a layer of cheesecloth. Boil it as below. You could take yarn (not cotton) and wrap it around the egg a few times then boil as below.
Colors:
Purple: blueberries
4 cup berries/ qt of water
Pink: raspberries
4 cup berries/ qt of water
Green: red cabbage
4 cup chopped/ qt of water
Yellow: Tumeric
2 tbs / qt of water
Copper: yellow onion skins
4 cup / qt of water
Bronze: brewed coffee
brew a strong quart of coffee
vinegar
Place color mixture into a pot and heat to boiling. Add 1 tsp vinegar to each mixture. Add eggs to boiling mixture and continue boiling for 5 minutes. Leave the eggs in the hot mixture for 30 minutes. Remove the eggs, rinse and dry. Lightly rub the eggs with vegetable oil for a shiny surface.
