Grandma Bayliss’s Chewy Brownies
I have an old cookbook called "The Butterick Book of Reicpes and Household Helps" copyright 1927, that belonged to my Grandma Bayliss. I never knew Grandma Bayliss because she died before I was born, but I have heard stories about her all my life.
The book has clippings stuck in and pages with recipes written on them. It has handwritten recipies written on all the fly pages. This recipe is one in Grandma Bayliss’s cookbook. We have made it many times over the years and they are very unique brownies, wonderfully chewy – almost like candy.
Yield: 24 brownies
Time: 45 minutes
9x12 baking pan, greased
350°
Ingredients:
4 oz unsweetened baking chocolate
½ cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
½ tsp salt
½ cup flour
½ cup nuts, chopped (optional)
Instructions:
Melt chocolate and butter. Add sugar, egg, salt, and flour. Mix in nuts and pour into greased 9x12 pan. Bake at 350 for 25 minutes.
These brownies look half‑baked when you take them out. Cut them into pieces while they are hot, but don't try to remove them from the pan until they cool a little. They harden as they cool so remove them from pans when they are still slightly warm.
Be sure your partials are cemented in well. These are chewy and marvelous with coffee or Cabernet.
