Mayan Hot Chocolate
One Christmas while we were living in Michigan the kids gave us a visit to the Kingsley House Bed and Breakfast in Fennville, MI. We had a wonderful time exploring the Saugatuck area during the day. That evening we discovered an interesting restaurant in Fennville called Salt of the Earth. After a wonderful meal they offered something called Mayan Hot Chocolate. It was really good hot chocolate, but in addition it was so warming. I have tried to reconstruct the beverage but it will never be as good without the romantic weekend!
I wanted to make this a No Sugar Added beverage so I have started with a store-bought mix. I really like the Kroger No Sugar Added Dutch Hot Cocoa Mix. The container is 10.6 oz and makes 20 cups of chocolate. You can use any similar product, but I recommend you look for something in a canister. You don’t want to have to open 20 little packets!
The other ingredient that is important is powdered vanilla. You may have to go to a specialty grocery store to find this, but it’s out there. Also, select good quality dark cocoa powder. I like Ghirardelli.
Ingredients:
10 oz No Sugar Added Hot Cocoa Mix
2 tbs ground cinnamon
1 tbs powdered vanilla
3 tbs powdered dark cocoa
1 tsp cayenne powder
Instructions:
Put all ingredients into a gallon Ziploc bag. Mix well.
Mix two tablespoons with a cup of water. Mix well – with a small whisk if possible. Enjoy!
